There are so many different types of e cigarette available these days that it can be a little overwhelming if you’re just starting out! We’ve compiled this list of all the different styles available and what they do, to help you choose the right type of e cigarette for you.
Otherwise known as…
e cigarette, e-cig, rechargeable e cig
Cig-alikes are, as the name suggests, the most similar to a traditional tobacco cigarette in that they are a similar size and shape and are built to closely replicate tobacco smoking. Therefore, people often find these are ideal when first starting out with e-cigs as they can seamlessly switch between them and real cigarettes. The sensation you get from them is the inhalation of vapour which also provides a ‘throat hit’ similar to that which you would experience with tobacco smoke, but without all the harmful chemicals. You do not need to press a button and simply inhale to activate the vapour.
Cig-a-likes most commonly consist of a rechargeable battery and replaceable ‘refills’, ‘cartridges’ or ‘cartomisers’. The batteries are small and usually last a few hours for heavy users or a couple of days if only used very occasionally. The end of the battery lights up as you inhale to show that it is charged and working, and also to further replicate a real cigarette. The battery light will usually flash and then go out to indicate that it needs charging.
How do they work?
When you inhale, a sensor triggers the heating chamber (known as the atomiser) to heat a small amount of liquid from the cartridge. This turns it into vapour which is drawn into your mouth through the central hole in the cartridge.
Authentic ‘cigarette’ feel
Easy to use
Battery is smaller than other e cigarette devices so needs charging more frequently
Ego E Cigarette
Otherwise known as…
Vape Pen, Personal Vaporiser (PV), refillable e cigarette
The combination of the larger battery and higher concentration of e-liquid means this style of ecig usually creates more vapour than the cigalike style. You can refill the tank with any e-liquid of your choice with lots of flavours and nicotine strengths available. These are usually a progressive device for people who have started on cig-a-likes but would like to try something different.
This device consists of a larger, longer battery that is usually more powerful than those of a cig-a-like. They also feature a replaceable ‘tank’ which screws onto the end of the battery and has a mouthpiece on the other end. This is referred to as the clearomiser and also contains the atomiser part.
How Does It Work?
The battery works slightly differently to the cig-alike in that you press a small button on the side whilst inhaling, to activate the production of vapour. The button usually lights up when in operation and you can often lock the battery to prevent it from being turned on whilst in your pocket for example (this can be done with our Zing Vape Pen by pressing the button 5 times in quick succession). The clearomiser contains the same kind of setup as the cig-a-like in that it has an atomiser to heat up the liquid but the tank can be refilled with any e-liquid of your choice, rather than being pre-filled. The clearomiser will need to be replaced every 2-8 weeks depending on frequency of use, or if you have one of our CE5-S clearomizers, you can re-use the tank indefinitely and just need to replace a small ‘coil’. E Cig Mods
Otherwise known as…
APV (Advanced Personal Vaporiser), Box Mods
This name is given to devices that are more advanced than the ego style and are designed for more experienced vapers. They are essentially a completely customisable version, where usually the set-up is based on a battery that is ‘Variable Voltage’ and has either a twist section or button function to change the voltage of the battery, allowing you to adjust the device to your tastes. You can also purchase ‘Box Mods’ which are usually a rectangular shaped battery that fits in the palm but is much more powerful than those that can fit in pen style devices, meaning they last longer between charges and have a higher wattage.
In addition to the variable voltage battery, the clearomiser part (mostly referred to as the ‘tank’) is more complex and features a replaceable atomiser, so that you do not need to replace the whole tank. There are lots of different tanks available to use with these batteries and some feature airflow adjustment so that you can further customise your vaping experience. Some can even be disassembled completely so that you can replace any part of it yourself (these are called ‘RDAs’) but these are only really used by very experienced vapers.
